Events go with a bang

One of the Safer Capital Partnership events taking place across Wales included a soccer skills session for youngsters – and the other involved them spending a night in the cells!

The South Wales Police Operation Bang 2010 second “night in the cells” event involved all the processes that real prisoners go through, from mug shots to prisoner suits, and special guest, CBBC Newsround presenter Hayley Cutts, did a feature on the project for the famous youth-based news programme.

The cell experience included talks by armed response officers
and dog handlers plus local neighbourhood officers on crime
prevention and keeping safe.

PCSO Chris Missen said: “Our first ‘lock up’ proved to be a big
hit and a good learning experience and, thanks to continued
partnership working, it’s great to hold another. It’s all about engaging young people and raising awareness of the consequences of crime.”

Steve Mac from Street Based Youth said: “The partnership
work we are doing in South Wales can also now be showcased
across the UK thanks to the support of Newsround.”

Bang it in the net
Another South Wales Police Operation Bang event started with
Events go with a bang a VIP tour of Cardiff City Stadium and a visit to where the media sit during City and Blues matches.

The youngsters then had a behind-the-scenes look at the changing rooms, the referee room and the official team washing-machine room – where some of the shirts of star players that have visited the stadium are proudly displayed.

Some of the youngsters took on the role of manager Dave Jones and gave motivational talks to their friends (or should that be Cardiff City stars of the future). They then sat in the dugout and walked on the hallowed turf before heading to the training pitches for a skills session. PCSO Tim Jones is pictured

PCSO Claire Quick said: “We work closely with our community
and partners to make sure that there are exciting things for the
youngsters to do and sport is brilliant at bringing the community together, both the youngsters and parents.”

Youngsters from Rumney were given the chance to experience
the great sport of golf in a special Operation Bang event in Cardiff.

They got some professional coaching, practiced their swings
on the driving range, and then took to the pitch and putt
course. PCSO Rob Parry is pictured with one of the children.
